The Iowa “Hill-A-Copter” tour being conducted in Iowa by Hillary Clinton is a reminder of how the Clinton political machine operates. Hillary slipping in the Iowa polls because she comes across as cold and calculating, while Barack Obama appears to be warm and gregarious? No problem, say the Clinton political machine guys and gals. They can do an image transformation, easy as toast.
Throughout Iowa, friends of Hillary (Reminds me of “Friends of Bill” from an earlier era) are blasting through every Iowa county, providing first-person testimonials of what a nice, warm, motherly figure Hillary is. Ads are running on TV in Iowa, amplifying the “Hillary is warm” mantra.
It looks like the Iowa caucus will ultimately be decided by whom has the best creative ad and PR people working in their campaign. This week, we are seeing that the imaging capacity of Clinton Inc. is no wimp on the political landscape in Iowa. We also see that Hillary Clinton can change campaign modes and strategies on a dime.

With the Iowa caucus taking on added importance due to the media focus, the Clinton political machine is in the midst of a helicopter road show. For five days Hillary Clinton and key surrogates will be hitting each of Iowa’s 99 counties, generating in the process major statewide media exposure. Coming right on top of the coveted endorsement by the state’s largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register, this appears to be a well-conceived strategy aimed at arresting Obama’s popularity among Iowa Democrats.
The Iowa caucus is not a traditional vote, but a highly complex process that is not easy to master. A large part in determining who will win the caucus will depend on organization, the ability to get people out to the caucus with the proper instructions. John Edwards is reputed to have a powerful machine left over from 2004, and Obama has invested heavily in Iowa. Beyond Hillary Clinton’s airborne assault on Iowa, what remains hidden is what has the Clinton political machine done to build its organization on the ground; that alone may determine who wins in Iowa.

Media reports indicate that former President Bill Clinton is exercising a larger role in reshaping the Hillary Clinton campaign. With polls in the early states suggesting a close race between Hillary and Barack Obama, apparently Bill Clinton decided the campaign needed a new message. Now Hillary will be the “true” change agent, trying to steal Obama’s thunder as the agent of change.
Bill Clinton is a slippery politician, but also very skillful at manipulating political imagery. Since this campaign is about electing a second Clinton administration, he has as much at stake as does Hillary Clinton.

Former Nebraska Governor and Senator Bob Kerrey has come out in support of Hillary Clinton as she embarks on her 5-day tour of Iowa. She and her surrogates intend to visit each of the state’s 99 counties.
Bob Kerrey’s endorsement is not an idle gesture. Being from next door Nebraska, and a decorated Navy SEAL veteran, his endorsement will likely resonate with male voters in Iowa. Coming just after the Des Moines Register’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton, it adds to the mix the Clinton political machine will try to spin into a perception that it is their candidate, not Obama, who has momentum in Iowa.
While the media still portrays Hillary’s campaign as imploding while Obama’s is ascending, it is interesting to note that in just the last 24 hours, the most strategic moves in Iowa are occurring within the Clinton camp. It appears to be no accident that Hillary Clinton’s major Iowa campaign trip was planned just after the release of the Register’s coveted endorsement. It may be a sign that the Clinton political machine is executing its strategy, but choosing not to “leak” all the information on its plans to the media.

With recent polls showing that the Iowa Caucus race is dead even between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the endorsement by the state’s leading newspaper, The Des Moines Register, could be decisive. It has now been announced that Hillary Clinton has won this important prize, with less than three weeks before the caucus on January 3.
In announcing its decision, the newspaper stated that the “readiness to lead sets her apart from a constellation of possible stars in her party, particularly Barack Obama, who also demonstrates the potential to be a fine president. When Obama speaks before a crowd, he can be more inspirational than Clinton. Yet, with his relative inexperience, it’s hard to feel as confident he could accomplish the daunting agenda that lies ahead.”
Reading between the lines, the Des Moines Register seems to be saying that competence and experience should determine the race, and Obama is deficient in these areas, unlike Hillary Clinton. No matter how the Obama forces spin this, this is clearly a major setback and disappointment for them, and a gain for the Clinton political machine.
Coincidentally, the day after the Register’s endorsement, Hillary Clinton begins a five-day blitz throughout the entire state of Iowa. She knows that if she can score a victory on January 3, the Primary race ends right then.

Today the Hillary Clinton Campaign announced the endorsement of Maine Governor John Baldacci. Amid the media hype about an Obama surge, it is interesting to note that the bulk of the Democratic Party establishment is still lining up behind Senator Clinton. On the other hand, I would not be surprised if former Clinton administration vice president Al Gore were to endorse Barack Obama, just as he endorsed Howard Dean in 2004.
Do the endorsements tell us anything? If the race were really tightening, the smart thing for these politicians to do would be to sit on the fence until it is clear who will win the nomination. These endorsements seem to indicate that many leading politicians in the Democratic Party still believe it is Hillary’s race to lose.

In the wake of a poll showing Obama leading Clinton by 1 point in New Hampshire, Fox News has just released their own poll showing that Hillary Clinton maintains a 9 point lead over her leading opponent in the Granite State. What is interesting about the Fox poll is that it was conducted just after Oprah Winfrey’s visit to the state, and follows a Fox poll in November that had Hillary with a seven point lead over Obama.
If anything, these contradictory polls point to their unreliability at this stage of the campaign. Some pundits argue that there is a Barack Obama surge in New Hampshire, however the Fox poll tells a different story.
What is clear is that these final weeks before the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary will be thick with intense campaign activity by Obama and Clinton.

Latest polls have Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama essentially even in New Hampshire. At one point, Hillary’s lead was well into double digits. What happened?
It seems one recent contributing factor was a major gaffe by a Clinton volunteer in New Hampshire, who attacked Barack Obama for drug use in his youth. What makes this attack bizarre is that Obama openly admitted to his youthful “indiscretions.” Hillary Clinton realized the stupidity of this attack, and quickly went into damage control. The volunteer was fired, Clinton issued an apology, and the damage is probably repairable. It would have been far more dangerous if this episode occurred just before the January 8 primary in New Hampshire.
Though the polls in the early states are narrowing between Obama and Hillary Clinton, they remain far apart in the bulk of the primaries that will be held on February 5. Obama hopes if he wins the early primaries, it will give him momentum for Tsunami Tuesday. However, Bill Clinton won the Democratic nomination in 1992, though he lost in New Hampshire and didn’t even compete in Iowa. Another poll just out shows Hillary Clinton ahead of Barack Obama nationally by 30%, even factoring in Obama’s rise in the poll numbers in New Hampshire and Iowa. More importantly, the Clintons are experienced in overcoming setbacks while campaigning, and they are utterly ruthless. The odds remain in Senator Clinton’s favor, however the media is now portraying the Democratic race as wide open.

The Clinton campaign has announced that the candidate and her surrogates will visit each and every county in Iowa over a five-day period, starting on December 16. With most polls showing that Hillary and Barack Obama are running neck and neck in Iowa, this is clearly a final attempt by Hillaryland to snatch a victory in the Iowa caucus, which would mean the effective end of the Democratic Primary.
Hillary Clinton will be traveling by special helicopter, already given the moniker of “Hill-A-Copter.” Kind of reminds me of Batman and the Batmobile. I suspect that this is not a panic move, but has been planned long in advance. It will be interesting to see what bag of tricks the Clinton political machine will be unveiling in Iowa during the final days of campaigning.

A Washington Post/ABC News national poll, just released, shows Hillary Clinton leading the Democratic Primary with 53%, followed by Barack Obama with 23%. All the other contenders are far behind.
The national media has been trumpeting a supposed Obama surge. Some surge. These latest results show Hillary Rodham Clinton leading Barack Obama by as wide a margin as any previous poll. It looks like Oprah Winfrey has not had a serious impact on chipping away at Hillary’s dominance.
