Hijacking The Change Message

1 comment December 29th, 2007

If Hillary Clinton wins the Iowa Caucus, it will be due to the success of the Hillaryland campaign in stealing the message of “change” from Barack Obama. Lacking experience or any record of serious political accomplishment, Barack Obama’s campaign has relied on the perception that he is the candidate of change, reinforced by the support of Oprah Winfrey. However, recent manifestations from the Obama campaign, such as blaming Benazir Bhutto’s murder on Hillary Clinton, undercut his seriousness while playing into the game plan of the Clinton political machine. Now, Obama is even attacking John Edwards. This does not enhance the credibility of his claim to be the candidate of change and hope.

In the meantime, Hillary Clinton has been aggressively positioning herself as both “experienced” and the true candidate of “change.” Her most recent Iowa TV ad focuses on the housing crisis, claiming that if the Iowa voters are ready for change, she is ready to “lead.” She has also gone back to attacking George W. Bush, while largely ignoring her Democratic rivals.

It appears that the Clinton political machine has been undertaking some serious polling in Iowa, responding with a succession of quickly produced TV spots designed to appeal to an array of Iowa voting constituencies. While the visible part of the campaign is in the final stretch, Hillary Clinton’s political operatives are also seeking to defeat Obama and Edwards on organization, insuring her supporters are out voting on January 3 in higher numbers than the opposition.

Is Hillary Clinton really the candidate of change? The French have a clever saying: “The more things change, the more they remain the same.”
