Hillary Clinton Maintains Lead Over Obama In Latest Poll
1 comment December 5th, 2007
The most recent Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll of Democrats across the nation shows that 45% plan on voting for Hillary Clinton in the upcoming primaries, versus 21% for Barack Obama and 11% for John Edwards. These results are very close to polling done before Hillary’s supposed implosion after the Philadelphia debate and a recent poll showing Obama had a slight lead in Iowa.
What these results seem to verify is that Hillary Clinton remains the overwhelming front-runner among Democratic presidential candidates. It is only in the Iowa caucus race that the three leading candidates are competitive. Obama’s sole hope is to win in Iowa, blow up his “victory” out of all proportion, than hope that gives him a bounce in New Hampshire. This is a very dicey scenario, and ignores the wider strategic moves on the ground.
While Edwards and Obama have focused their energies on the small state of Iowa, the Clinton political machine has been building up a vast campaign infrastructure in the key states up for grabs on what is being billed as “Tsunami Tuesday.” On February 5, more than 20 states will be conducting primaries. Hillary Clinton not only has a large lead in the polls in all those states; she has the machinery in place to turn out the vote.
Barack Obama may have Oprah Winfrey and a lot of campaign money, but without the ruthless efficiency of the Clinton political machine, there is little chance he can overturn Hillary Clinton’s big lead in the national polls.
