Polls Show Clinton In Tight Race

December 30th, 2007

The latest Iowa caucus polls are all over the map. Most of the recent ones have Hillary Clinton in a tight or modest lead over Obama. MSNBC has a poll showing, of all things, John Edwards in the lead, with Hillary Clinton in second and Obama in third place. Where is this supposed Obama surge?

It is clear that these polls are meaningless. The Iowa results will depend on a myriad of factors, including the weather. Most importantly, the candidate with the strongest organization will have the decisive advantage.

Though Hillary Clinton is polling much stronger in Iowa then she has for most of the past year, the media continues to under-estimate her political skill and cunning. One media pundit claims that Hillary Clinton’s recent “softer image” campaign in Iowa was a failure, which is supposedly why she is back on selling experience. I think they miss the point. Her “softer image” actually did succeed in stopping her decline in Iowa, and restoring her competitiveness with Obama. As for the shift in her campaign back to “experience,” this is another example of how the Clinton political machine can, with alacrity, shift positions on a dime, depending on which direction the popular winds among the electorate are blowing.
