February 5 And Hillary Clinton

The 2008 Democratic primary schedule, far advanced compared with previous election cycles, will cluster 20 state primaries on February 5. That date, dubbed “Tsunami Tuesday,” will decide with finality who the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee is. Hillary Clinton has geared her strategy towards dominance on February 5.

While the media has been focused on the Iowa caucus, Hillaryland has been constructing a powerful campaign infrastructure designed to deliver a knockout punch on February 5. This is about more than dollars to spend on advertising. It is about connectivity with key individuals that have the capacity to deliver a voter turnout for the preferred candidate. By all measures, Hillary Clinton is way out in front of Barack Obama, with none of the other Democratic contenders even being competitive with Obama. It is no doubt due to how February 5 is shaping up that Hillary Clinton’s demeanor has been one of calm equanimity. Though the media has been trying to create an illusion of panic in the Hillary campaign camp due to Oprah Winfrey’s appearances on behalf of her candidate, I see no sign that Hillary or her organization is sweating bullets. It appears they are executing their work plan for winning the nomination, after which Hillary Clinton can then move into general campaign mode.

If Hillary Clinton indeed triumphs on February 5, expect her campaign organization to initiate a swift transition from Obama bashing to Republican bashing. Who says the Clintons lack flexibility?
