Is General Wesley Clark Campaigning As Hillary’s Running Mate In 2008?

December 6th, 2007

General Wesley Clark has an impressive resume. He retired as a four-star general, having served as the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe of NATO. In that capacity, he led Bill and Hillary Clinton’s undeclared air war against Serbia, which resulted in thousands of Serbian civilians being killed. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, but withdrew when support did not materialize. However, he is now strongly endorsing Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, and is currently in Iowa, campaigning aggressively on her behalf.

General Clark’s journey to Iowa may have far more to do with other reasons than countering Oprah Winfrey’s visit on behalf of Barack Obama. If the General can deliver Iowa to Hillary Clinton in the midst of what is essentially a three way tie, he may earn his stripes as Hillary Clinton’s eventual running mate, once she has won the Democratic presidential nomination.

From Hillary’s standpoint, General Clark may be the ideal running mate. As a retired military man of high rank, who went to war for the Clintons, he can sharpen her attempt to portray herself as a tough and decisive commander-in-chief. Clark can help neutralize attempts by Republicans to portray Senator Clinton as soft on national security. He may help deliver Republican states to the Clinton column in the presidential election as Hillary’s vice presidential candidate. However, he must first prove himself to Hillary by facilitating her winning the Iowa caucus.

Bringing General Wesley Clark to Iowa is undoubtedly a very shrewd act of political warfare by the all-calculating Clinton political machine.
