Hillary Clinton And Iran

December 4th, 2007

Hillary Clinton has consistently exploited the Iran question as political fodder, rather than being engaged as the serious national security and diplomatic matter that it is. The way Hillary Clinton seems to deal with the Iran question is to have her staffers determine the direction of the political wind, than issue statements that would seem to satisfy the polling data. What is absent is serious knowledge and a will to remove the thorn of American-Iranian hostility that has so poorly served the interests of both countries.

The recent national intelligence estimate on Iranian nuclear weapons intentions should, like all previous NIE estimates on a host of matters, be treated with a grain of salt. What is still left is that Iran, by its own admission, is engaged in a high-priority project to develop the means to produce enriched uranium on an industrial scale. This can be used for either fueling a nuclear power reactor or building a nuclear bomb. Iran’s first nuclear power reactor may go online in the next year, with no others under construction. The skepticism about Iran’s ultimate intentions will persist, though Hillary Clinton has already claimed that the latest NIE means everything is changed with respect to Iran.

Iran and America both have their share of megalomaniac politicians, which has poisoned relations between the two countries. I don’t see where Hillary Clinton would be an advantage in improving relations between the two countries. For eight years, President Bill Clinton and co-president Hillary Clinton ignored Iran as a priority for America’s security, even when the Iranian people elected a moderate president who sought to improve mutual relations. The Clintons clearly saw no political benefit to spending time on Iran back then. Perhaps now Hillary Clinton thinks acting alternatively hard and soft on Iran will get her more votes.

For those who recognize that resolving the nearly thirty years of cold war with Iran is a national priority, Hillary Clinton would offer no advancement over the dismal record of the first Clinton presidency.
