Hillary Clinton Raises $27 Million

Hillary’s third quarter fundraising results were a closely guarded Clintonian secret, until Barack Obama had reported his numbers. The expectation by the pundits was that Obama would continue the pattern of his previous quarter, and maintain his status as the leading Democratic money-collector. So the media was taken by surprise when Hillaryland announced that its latest quarterly results totaled $27 million dollars, versus $20 million for Obama. The other Democratic presidential candidates were so far behind, they were almost invisible. Though Hillary’s lead over Obama diminishes somewhat when general elections contributions are discounted, she is still ahead by millions of dollars. Also, for the first time with quarterly results, Hillary Clinton did better than Obama in attracting new contributors, more than 100,000 versus 93,000.

In my previous blogs, I predicted that in the fall Hillaryland would focus on beating Obama in the fundraising sweepstakes. In the meantime, she has spent her time strategically, building a potent campaign machine.

It appears that Barack Obama, the only serious competitor to Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination, is on the descent, politically speaking. The latest quarterly results demonstrate that not only the Party establishment, but also rank and file stalwarts, recognize that Hillary is going to get the nomination, and they prefer identifying with a winner.

When Obama first emerged as a presidential candidate, media pundits claimed that he would soon catch and then surpass Hillary Clinton’s lead in the polls. However, the exact opposite has occured; Hillary’s lead has widened in the past 8 months. In reality, despite all the media hype, Barack Obama chose to play tennis on a football field, with two of the most experienced and ruthless political quarterbacks huddled against him. In the meantime, however, he has fulfilled his mission, from the perspective of Hillaryland. Barack Obama has succeeded in sucking the oxygen out of the campaigns of more experienced Democratic presidential challengers, thus greasing the skids for Hillary’s romp to the nomination.

There is a lesson in this for Republicans. If they believe another Hollywood-selected star will be able to compete with Hillary Clinton, they will be proven by history to have made the wrong political calculation.
