American Hiroshima
August 3rd, 2007
Hillary Clinton has now denounced Barack Obama for taking nuclear weapons “off the table” as a potential tool to be used against global terrorism. Yet, neither Senator Clinton, nor Senator Obama, nor any of her other Democratic and Republican challengers, has spoken out about the threat of nuclear terrorism posed by Al-Qaeda and its affiliates.
Things were somewhat different during the 2004 presidential campaign. In one of their televised debates, both President Bush and his Democratic opponent, Senator Kerry, agreed that terrorists coming into possession of nuclear weapons posed the single greatest threat to America’s national security. Unfortunately, neither candidate went beyond the rhetoric, offering no concrete steps for reducing this menace. But at least the danger was acknowledged.
As 2008 approaches, the two leading Democratic contenders for succeeding George W. Bush see nuclear weapons as a political football to hurl back and forth as a mere campaign prop. Neither of these two candidates has offered any clear evidence that they comprehend the nature and scope of the threat.
This Monday, August 6, marks the sixty-second anniversary of the detonation of a nuclear device on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Osama bin Laden has made no secret of his desire to obtain nuclear munitions. In the past, Al-Qaeda chatter has spoken about a long-planned “American Hiroshima.” Experts on nuclear weapons and national security with impeccable credentials have presented compelling evidence that, without radically improved policies and behavior aimed at thwarting nuclear terrorism, it is almost certain that we will witness a nuclear detonation in a major American city, perpetrated by Al-Qaeda and its affiliates.
Recently, the head of homeland security, Chertoff, stated that he had a “gut feeling” that something really bad may happen this summer. The man has access to highly classified intelligence that he cannot reveal, but which may be the unappetizing bits that have convulsed his intestinal fortitude. Echoing this foreshadowing of doom, Al-Qaeda websites are hinting at a horrific “surprise” for the American people.
Mindless propaganda for the paranoid or sober hints of what is to come? No one outside of the inner sanctum of Al-Qaeda can answer that question with certainty. However, given the apocalyptic consequences of an American Hiroshima, one can certainly say the following: if Hillary Clinton were indeed the most highly qualified American in all the land to assume the mantle of commander-in-chief, wouldn’t she spend more time on this issue, and less time on campaign song contests and a Sopranos redux video?

It is really frightening to read this. I thought the war in Iraq was supposed to prevent this nuclear stuff from ever happening. Hillary Clinton needs to speak to this threat, if she really deserves to be our next president.

Hillary Clinton does not understand the psychology of the Moslem world. We need a president who can present the true face of America to all the world, so the international community will oppose Osama bin Laden.
