Barack Obama Raises Record $32.5 Million
July 2nd, 2007
Barack Obama has outraised Senator Hillary Clinton by $10 million in second quarter contributions that can be spent on the Democratic presidential primary contest, facilitated by the contributions of about 154,000 individual donors, according to reports, though we still await the official tally from the Hillaryland camp. That being said, is Hillary Clinton really worried, as the media pundits are claiming? I rather doubt it.
These same media experts originally predicted that Barack Obama would be even with Hillary Clinton in the polls, or even surpass her, by Memorial Day. What actually happened is that Hillary Clinton’s lead grew, while Obama stagnated in the polls. The experts are now saying that Obama will be able to use his cash dominance to buy clever advertising, and that will give him a boost in the polls. Well shucks, if that’s such a clever analysis, why did it not work for Howard Dean in 2004?
As I’ve said in this blog before, I actually think Obama helps Hillary Rodham Clinton far more than harming her. While his fundraising performance is impressive, it must be put into the context of the electoral battlefield. Barack has in no way inhibited Hillary Clinton in her ability to raise money. She is a very close second to Obama, and is way in front of all her other Democratic competitors, in dollars raised. Why is Barack’s fundraising good for Hillary? Because good old Barack Obama, a junior Senator with no national record to speak of, aside from writing a couple of books, has sucked all the oxygen out of all the other contenders for the nomination, save Hillary. Edwards, Richardson and Biden, who may have threatened Hillary Clinton in her march to the presidency if they had the resources to compete with her, have been marginalized by the Obama campaign, which is diverting all the money and media exposure that might otherwise have gone to more credible and serious challengers in the Democratic Party to the Clinton political machine. And who is this Obama that is sucking up the bulk of anti-Hillary financial contributors in the Democratic Party? Obama is No-bama. As is increasingly clear from the candidates forums and debates, Barack is merely meat on the table for the far more practiced and ruthless Hillary Clinton and her machine. She is eating him alive. Besides, if this was really only about money, there is no doubt that Hillary and Bill Clinton could easily outpace Obama in collecting cash. Instead, while mounting a still credible fundraising effort-it has broken every record, except for Obama’s-Hillary and Bill Clinton, underneath the media radar, have been silently but shrewdly building up the campaign infrastructure and political endorsements that will demonstrate Hillary’s power, when the primary and caucus campaigns begin in earnest. One reflection of this activity is the growing list of endorsements from top Democrats that Hillary Clinton is collecting. Hillary is doing vastly better in this critical area than Obama, even with Black politicans. Just a few days ago, the first Black mayor of New York City, David Dinkins, came out in support of Hillary Clinton. Even within the African-American community as a whole, Hillary is out-polling Barack Obama by a small margin, the opposite one would expect, based on the media hype. And among women, the most important voting constituency in the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton is vastly ahead of Barack Obama, and all other challengers.
There is another advantage that Obama’s fundraising totals provide Hillary. When she does capture her Party’s nomination, a legend will be created that has her “beating” big money in her quest for the Democratic Party nomination.
An example of how phoney and contrived the Obama challenge is to Hillary Clinton is the very popular “Obama Girl” video that has been making the rounds on YouTube. As it turns, this video, which suggests people should vote for Obama because he is some kind of sex symbol, without even a hint at his policy positions or substantive ideas, has the role of the “Obama Girl” played by an actress who, when interviewed by the media, made it clear she was just doing a job, and was not even sure she would vote for Barack Obama.
If the 2008 presidential election is about image fabrication more than substance, Barack Obama has no chance against the consumate veteran Hillary Clinton, no matter how much dough he raises.
